Concert by Harkeerat Mangat and Balázs Virágh
7.30 pm
Dhrupad is the oldest and most austere genre of Indian classical music. The term itself is derived from the Sanskrit words dhruva ("fixed" or "immovable") and pada ("verse" or "composition"), referring to the genre's foundation in structured verse. Despite its reliance on fixed form, a performance of Dhrupad requires the spontaneous creation of new musical ideas—a dynamic quality that enables the musician to fuse tradition with contemporary thought.
Since 2021, Harkeerat Mangat and Balázs Virágh have collaborated as a musical duo. Their style is driven by a shared interest in the melodic and rhythmic complexity that emerges from synthesizing their respective musical lineages.
Harkeerat Mangat (1990, Canada) is an artist and musician. He is a senior vocal student of Pt. Uday Bhawalkar from Pune, India and a Meisterschüler of the Christopher Williams photography class at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Balázs Virágh (1994, Hungary) is a senior pakhawaj student of Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma, and ICCR alumnus (Sangeet Natak Akademi Kathak Kendra, New Delhi). He has given lectures at institutions such as the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Szegedi Tudományegyetem (SZTE), the University of Erfurt (Germany), and Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan (Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India)
